APEX as a Tool to Extend Oracle EBS (E-Business Suite)

Oracle APEX (Application Express) is a powerful low-code development platform that enables the creation of web applications directly on top of the Oracle database and serves as an excellent tool to extend the functionality of Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS). It is a fully supported and free feature of every Oracle database, making it a cost-effective choice.

How Does Oracle APEX Extend the Functionality of Oracle EBS?

APEX is integrated directly into the database alongside the database component of the EBS instance, ensuring that applications created in APEX can leverage all the security features and scalability offered by the Oracle database.

Independence from EBS version – APEX works with EBS versions from 11i up to R12.2.x, so EBS updates do not affect the APEX engine and vice versa. This guarantees that your applications will survive EBS patches and upgrades.

  • Utilization of existing data and logic – APEX allows the creation of applications that seamlessly integrate with Oracle E-Business Suite and use existing data models, business rules, and security policies.
  • Use of SQL and PL/SQL – EBS developers can easily apply their SQL and PL/SQL knowledge in APEX, leading to faster development without the need to learn a new language. They can use all the EBS API interfaces, views, and synonyms they are accustomed to.
  • Web Services – APEX can both consume and provide web services, enabling secure data exchange between EBS and other services within the organization, replacing less secure methods such as Excel files.
  • Integration with the EBS user interface – APEX can share session context and be launched directly from the Oracle E-Business Suite Navigator or custom EBS form menus. Users will barely notice the difference between a native EBS application and an APEX application.
  • Replacement of outdated tools – APEX can serve to replace or modernize legacy functions such as Oracle Forms, Oracle Reports, and Discoverer, which are no longer optimized for modern needs, including mobile devices.
  • Creation of various types of applications – APEX enables the development of interactive reports, dashboards, customized data entry screens, and data management interfaces (for example, replacing Web ADI). Examples include supplier portals, order management applications, and distribution tracking dashboards.
